An 11-year-old Texas boy was killed in a drive-by shooting early Sunday in what police believe may have been a case of mistaken identity.
Kamren Jones was struck and killed by a bullet while he was sleeping after multiple shots were fired inside his Channelview home just outside Houston.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said that he believes the home was targeted because of the tenants that lived there previously.
“This is senseless, tragic and sad situation,” Gonzalez said in a video posted on Twitter. “This is a child and these are cowards shooting into a home.”
He added that the shooting was especially heartbreaking given it happened the day the city of Houston had designated Maleah Davis Day. Hundreds, dressed in pink, gathered outside City Hall Sunday for a march in the 4-year-old girl's memory after she was found dead a month after she went missing.
"It's tragic on the day that we honor Maleah Davis and her death," Gonzalez said. "As we pay tribute and pay remembrance of her, that we're now investigating the death of another child, so this is really heartbreaking."
Anyone with information about Kamren's shooting is urged to call the Harris County Sheriff's Department at 713-222-6000 or CrimeStoppers.
